  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

This full-length record album, recorded at the beginning of 2020 in Beacon, NY, perfectly displays the powerful dynamics of this superfine rock and roll trio. This batch of Clair songs, all written in the last half of 2019, are elevated by the muscle and prowess of his well-suited comrades, Daria Grace on bass, and Aaron Latos on drums. Clair wields a telecaster throughout. You know that glorious Fender sound when things are turned up loud but played (sometimes) delicately. The band performs with the ferocity and immediacy of one of their late-night live shows, while maintaining a mighty but always dangerous control over the songs. A band has to have played—and played—shows together to play with such knowing abandon. In case you can't tell, we are thrilled with this record, and if ever there was a Stephen Clair record to be pressed to vinyl, this is it.

Includes full lyrics insert and the undeniable joy of fondling vinyl and a real record sleeve! Put the record on, and the band steps right into the room with you.

That old Antoinette When she gets on the Internet It’s like she grows a second head You can’t believe the things she’s said The next day Antoinette I saw her at the Superette She didn’t seem to recollect She’d sent us over the edge Is this thing on You can get out of bed On the same side for so long Waking up on the wrong side It can happen to anyone People maybe ought to talk Rather than make shit up You can wreak some damage With a little imagination Is this thing on Where do people get off I mean where do they get on Where are we now Is this thing on? I just want to hear your story Sing me a little song Something you made up It doesn’t have to be that long Is this thing on

Dorothy 03:39
Going to a show alone Have a drink with my phone Sometimes you will come along In my mind, like old times Dorothy Why’d you have to blame me Oh Dorothy Just admit you were playing me But I let it go cos I still want you Oh Dorothy How could you blame me Dorothy Your old man wants to know How'm I gonna make a lot of dough I didn’t see that one coming He probably thinks that I’m just slumming Dorothy Why’d you have to blame me Oh Dorothy Just admit you were playing me But I let it go cos I still want you Oh Dorothy How could you blame me Dorothy We woulda been darling millionaires But we really couldn’t care Dorothy Why did you run Dorothy We had our fun Dorothy How could you blame me Oh Dorothy

No teeth No lips But she’s got them egg-laying hips No chance Of a kiss Romance remains at the top off my list Cooped up in this roost with all these chicks And the henhouse ain’t a funhouse When you’re fixing to fly but your wings don’t get you high She’s quick She had a hunch We could wind up somebody’s lunch She says to me Hey, you feel that breeze? Spread your wings and fly with me Here we are on the roof with no-one around Check out them fools down on the ground When you’re fixing to fly but your wings don’t get you high We’re out on the town Going from roof to roof No looking down Going from roof to roof And the henhouse ain’t no funhouse When you’re fixing to fly but your wings don’t get you high

Nobody Knows 03:44
Nobody knows what you got Nobody knows what you got You got dirt on me I got dirt on you You got dirt on me I got dirt on you Nobody knows what you hide Nobody knows what you keep inside We’re all wondering what you’re hustling on the sly Nobody knows what you hide Nobody knows when they’re gonna die You say you’ve got bigger fish to fry Me I’m just an average guy I’m no mind reader Nobody knows what you say Nobody knows what you say When the light of day has gone away When the light of day has gone away Nobody knows where you go Nobody knows where you go when you go We all got smoke we gonna blow Nobody knows where you go Nobody knows when they’re gonna die You say you’ve got bigger fish to fry Me I’m just an average guy I’m no mind reader Nobody knows what you got Nobody knows what you got You got dirt on me I got dirt on you You got dirt on me I got dirt on you

Marie 05:07
Marie was a physicist, slept with numbers in her head Didn’t leave much room for me in Marie’s bed When I tell her how I really feel she says its relative She opens up the curtain, sun comes pouring in She says that light’s been traveling since the dawn of man She tells me where I’m going is exactly where I’ve been Jack Dempsey was a boxer, the bare-fisted type Every confrontation lookout for Dempsey’s right Fans would eat it up and meet him at the train It was just this sort of love that made Marie insane She had a gift for conversation don’t dare disagree Tell me, have you ever even chased a bumblebee She wore her wedding dress, pushing up her sleeves She’s not afraid of love she’ll always take a swing Nothing gets her off like getting in the ring She tells me where I’m going is exactly where I’ve been Oh Marie, what’s it gonna be Marie You think the sky is deep just imagine what she sees She opens up her arms and gives the world a squeeze When I tell her how I really feel she says its relative She opens up the curtain, sun comes pouring in She says that light’s been travelling since the dawn of man She tells me where I’m going is exactly where I’ve been Oh Marie, what’s it gonna be Marie

I went looking for some candy I went looking for something nice It was you, took my fancy You were playing me all right Baby don’t change Baby don’t leave Baby don’t even tell me Until I’m good and ready for the truth And I’m not You may not be who i thought you were But that’s on me not you I got on pretty happily In my little fantasy Pig in a poke Got me going Pig in a poke Y’always blowing Pig in a poke Smoke and mirrors Pig in a poke Left me standing here Feeling like a dope I supposed you had my number I supposed I couldn’t wait to surrender Why why why why can’t you let me Go on pretending Sweet dreams of you i conjured These visions made me swoon You occupied a place But it wasn’t even you was it Pig in a poke Got me going Pig in a poke Y’always blowing Pig in a poke Smoke and mirrors Pig in a poke Left me standing here Feeling like a dope

I'm In It 03:32
I am waiting in a phone booth It’s no easy feat Just you try and find a phone booth Somewhere on your street I’m in it I’m in it I’m in it So deep I am running out of patience Waiting for the beep Not today, no, not tomorrow It’s me who’s on the brink I’m in it I’m in it I’m in it one minute So deep I mighta known But I chose to deny If I could read minds Why would I There must be some way through this Something I can do To be passing weary hours Waiting on you I’m in it I’m in it I’m in it admit it So deep

Hurricane coming Let’s take to the streets See what’s the deal Windows are boarded up The air is still But we’re feeling pretty wound Hurricane coming Left a scar across Florida yesterday We’re going out On Rampart street With our mandolins Busking for the rats and fellow cranks Red beans, high tides May the river rise I’m gonna love my pillow tonight Hurricane coming There’s a lady walking up and down With that lizard stole her heart You gotta really feel love For a reptile Hurricane coming Come get under the bed May the river rise up To meet us The air is still And we’re feeling pretty wound Red beans, high tides May the river rise I’m gonna love my pillow tonight Hurricane coming I may never sleep But I guess we can do that When we’re good and gone We dream its the end But what will the morning bring Red beans, high tides May the river rise I’m gonna love my pillow tonight

Fate 04:51
Well I left it up to Fate So she took me on a date Combed the only street in town Going up and down Up and down Big junior swears that night Fate was lit up like a light We end up at this joint She’s itching for a fight It was way past closing time My head had lost its mind Fate grew insincere Singing in my ear One of these nights I swear Fate I’m not so sure Of your so-called plan I’m not proud And I don’t think I’m to blame But come on Fate What’s my name The firecracker kids Are blowing stuff to bits Nothing else to do Nothing

Cheap Date 03:48
Cheap date I can stay out late I can stay all night I don’t need a ride My bike’s outside Cheap date We can go to the park Make out in the dark Look at the stars I’m an easy mark We don’t have to drive We don’t have to go anywhere We can just sit in the backseat Doesn’t take much to get me high Turn out your pockets Put me in your locket Put your finger in the socket I’m a cheap date Cheap date There’s an art opening tonight They’ll have some box wine Cheese and crackers And grapes and grapes and grapes and grapes We can take the ferry Get to the other side It’s free from here to there We can hitch a ride What’s that up there? Where? What’s your favorite constellation Mines Vulpecula Cheap date

about

Stephen Clair Beacon, New York

“Blending the kind of jaggedly cool guitar and piano that put Spoon on the map with a deadpan, almost spoken-word vocal delivery, the song quickly evolves into a righteous bar band anthem that feels as much linked to acts like the Hold Steady as it does to Wilco”
