lyrics

It’s Only Christmas

brother just got back from the war
He still don’t know what we are fighting for
Cashes his check at the liquor store
Says he didn’t mean to punch the door
Better than working on the floor
This time of year at the wal mart store

Mom always complains but more this time of year
Switches to scotch from her usual beer
Every holiday it’s the same refrain
Since us kids grew up Christmas aint the same
the lights don’t shine the bells don’t ring
Ma cant your hear them carolers sing

They sing hey we’ll get through this
Fa la la fa la la
We sing hey we can do this (it’s only Christmas)
Hey its ok Fa la la fa la la

we gotta deal w/Christmas cos its here to stay
someone dreamed it up but it wont go away
Ebeneezer scrooge came around in the end
Went out in the world, tried to make amends
Turns out he’s a fiction too
Ebeneezer scrooge ain’t me or you

There’s some good in this world you see it every day
Don’t need to pin it on no holiday
It aint in the news it aint the scoop
It sure as hell aint president nincompoop
Let’s set things straight don’t give it too much weight,
… we all know the date…

about

Stephen Clair Beacon, New York

“Blending the kind of jaggedly cool guitar and piano that put Spoon on the map with a deadpan, almost spoken-word vocal delivery, the song quickly evolves into a righteous bar band anthem that feels as much linked to acts like the Hold Steady as it does to Wilco”
