Nothing Has Changed

about

this was written right around the new year, when we were really starting to believe maybe, just maybe we were about to see a little light coming in...

I had a good time playing around with this one, building this track out of free loops that I found on the interweb, which I then manipulated and chopped up and put back together. Not my usual style of making folk music, my default joy is making a ruckus with other players in the room with me, but a cool exercise.

Here, finally, is a real mix of the song, mixed by a real mix engineer himself, Mr Jonny Taylor.

lyrics

Nothing Has Changed

Around the same time every morning
For days now maybe weeks
We wake up wondering
Did we even sleep

Nothing has changed
The light comes in just the same
The dog’s on your pillow
And here comes that rain

I can tell you all my dreams
Like I did yesterday
They’re not so big
Just wish something would change

But no dice
There’s noone to blame
It’s cold in here
And the coffee tastes the same

Today I might do something
If I manage to get dressed
Oh I’ve got intentions
But they slip my mind at best

Nothing has changed
What day is this?
It helps me to remember
When we kiss

And it helps me to forget
The ones I miss

about

Stephen Clair Beacon, New York

“Blending the kind of jaggedly cool guitar and piano that put Spoon on the map with a deadpan, almost spoken-word vocal delivery, the song quickly evolves into a righteous bar band anthem that feels as much linked to acts like the Hold Steady as it does to Wilco”
