  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

This full-length record album, recorded at the beginning of 2020 in Beacon, NY, perfectly displays the powerful dynamics of this superfine rock and roll trio. This batch of Clair songs, all written in the last half of 2019, are elevated by the muscle and prowess of his well-suited comrades, Daria Grace on bass, and Aaron Latos on drums. Clair wields a telecaster throughout. You know that glorious Fender sound when things are turned up loud but played (sometimes) delicately. The band performs with the ferocity and immediacy of one of their late-night live shows, while maintaining a mighty but always dangerous control over the songs. A band has to have played—and played—shows together to play with such knowing abandon. In case you can't tell, we are thrilled with this record, and if ever there was a Stephen Clair record to be pressed to vinyl, this is it.

Includes full lyrics insert and the undeniable joy of fondling vinyl and a real record sleeve! Put the record on, and the band steps right into the room with you.

lyrics

Marie was a physicist, slept with numbers in her head
Didn’t leave much room for me in Marie’s bed
When I tell her how I really feel she says its relative
She opens up the curtain, sun comes pouring in
She says that light’s been traveling since the dawn of man
She tells me where I’m going is exactly where I’ve been

Jack Dempsey was a boxer, the bare-fisted type
Every confrontation lookout for Dempsey’s right
Fans would eat it up and meet him at the train
It was just this sort of love that made Marie insane
She had a gift for conversation don’t dare disagree
Tell me, have you ever even chased a bumblebee
She wore her wedding dress, pushing up her sleeves
She’s not afraid of love she’ll always take a swing
Nothing gets her off like getting in the ring

She tells me where I’m going is exactly where I’ve been
Oh Marie, what’s it gonna be Marie

You think the sky is deep just imagine what she sees
She opens up her arms and gives the world a squeeze
When I tell her how I really feel she says its relative
She opens up the curtain, sun comes pouring in
She says that light’s been travelling since the dawn of man

She tells me where I’m going is exactly where I’ve been
Oh Marie, what’s it gonna be Marie

about

Stephen Clair Beacon, New York

“Blending the kind of jaggedly cool guitar and piano that put Spoon on the map with a deadpan, almost spoken-word vocal delivery, the song quickly evolves into a righteous bar band anthem that feels as much linked to acts like the Hold Steady as it does to Wilco”
